Poorest County in Illinois

The comparative poverty of Jackson County made the headlines in the Southern today. As the article pointed out, we have a lot of students here, who often have income levels below $10,000 and do not need much more because their living expenses are covered by university tuition and housing fees.

Another factor to remember is that it is comparatively cheap to living in Jackson County. According to Poverty in America's Living Wage Calculator, a living wage for one adult in Jackson County is only $7.48, meaning a single adult could make minimum wage and still live decently well.  Of course, add a child to the mix and your expenses and needed income skyrocket.
