Highway 13

From what I understand, when Highway 13 was expanded to multiple lanes and run through downtown., part of the agreement was on street parallel parking . Highway 13 eastbound along Walnut in the Arbor District area has the promised onstreet parking. However, it was never installed on westbound Main Street. It still could be which might help slow traffic through that area. I would really like seeing 13 reduced to 2 lanes going through town. There is no good reason for 3 lanes of traffic running through a residential area.

  1. Bingo! The 3 lanes of traffic made sense in 1989-1991 when C'dale was on its way to becoming Champaign-south but when the growth slowed and then growth turned to continued decline the city should have realized that a highway running through a small town is a terrible idea.

I cant fathom why the arbor district has been OK with this for the last 2 decades as the area has declined.

Two lanes would definitely help slow the traffic as would the installation of bike lanes and other traffic calming measures like sidewalk bumpouts ,etc. I think you would see a pretty quick uptick in the desirability of the arbor district if 13 is turned into 2 lanes instead of 3.
