Saluki Way Tax

The Saluki Way tax is due to expire in 2027 but waiting until then to push the council not to renew it is a bad idea. Unless residents want to keep a sales tax higher than 93% of the rest of the state's municipalities, they need to start letting the current members of the council know they do not want any resolutions passed keeping the tax.

  1. This is very important since Pritzker restored the sales tax he removed prior his election as a gimmick. Unless the Council remove this tax now, they will show themselves to be as corrupt and manipulative as the present Governor.

  2. I'm sure you are correct but this will only drive more people away from Carbondale.

  3. The annoying part is that the Saluki Way tax does not go to the city at all, so keeping it will add more money to the general fund. Since 2007, the extra money has gone to retire bonds issued to fund the new Saluki Stadium, Arena remodel and buildings around the S. Illinois entrance to SIUC. The city has not had access to that money, anymore than it had access to the tax money that was collected to fund the bonds issued for the high school roof, but I was told the city need that money wne it came time for the tax to expire.

  4. This is another example of how SIUC has wasted money on buildings that have nothing to do with its educational mission. Poshard believed that students came here for sports. They do not. Insinuations of parasitism were made against the Carbondale community then. Now we have a Sports Stadium dedicated to Banterra! Enrollments do not seem to be getting any higher every year. Higher administrators receive bonuses anyway. Isn't it time for an investigation?
