Oakland Avenue Auto Shop

Does not appear to be any movement on this.  There is no sign the business plans to move.  The business is still open and doing quite well apparently with anywhere from 2 to 6 cars under repair, or at least inside the building, at any given time.  I inquired about the status of the business at city hall a week ago and it appears that determining if it needs to move because of improper zoning is currently in a holding pattern.

  1. Seems like a political time bomb. You go after that shop, the city might well lose in court and you attack a business who has fixed up a long term, eyesore building. Hopefully, the people around it will realize how nice it is to drop off your car and easily walk home. It would be really great if the shop owners did good work and ran a good business.

Carbondale has a group of rock throwers who are doing their best to stop economic development. I know that isn't their stated objective, just how it turns out. Should be interesting to hear what their angle is to complain about a business that seems to be a major improvement over an empty building. There are times when NIMBY is the right road, but to often in Carbondale, the NIMBY crowd shoots firsts and asks questions later.

  2. That would be the best option, in my opinion, and the opinion of most of the city council and I have not heard much on the subject in the past couple of months. The Auto Shop looks like a good neighbor. The place is kept clean and no cars are parked outside at night, just as they promised. Of course, this is only about 3 months into their tenure. We will have to see what their standards are like a year from now.
