Pony May Reopen

The liquor license for The Pony Cabaret and Steakhouse comes up for renewal for 2016-2017 today. Also on the agenda is a formalized definition of what is meant by "topless" and "bottomless". It appears they may have used an "or" in the original ordinance when they meant to write "and".

Ding Dong Baity's Gone

It appears the now shuttered Pony is happy to see the departure of city manager Kevin Baity as the above is what is showing on the marquee outside the establishment.

The Pony vs. Curbside

In case you missed it, two local bars and grills, The Pony Cabaret and Steakhouse and Curbside, both had their liquor licenses pulled, Curbside for two weeks and The Pony permanently. What is interesting is the length of time and the offenses for which each lost its license.

Curbside had theirs pulled for " several liquor license violations including not having a state liquor license last year and having a felon as manager" while the Pony lost theirs for "owner having been convicted of tax evasion and forgery in California in the 1990s". In addition, while Curbside has had problems with patrons fighting outside of the establishment and leaving quite a bit of litter in surrounding parking lots, as near as I can tell, the only other problem associated with the Pony was a citation for a blocked fire door. In other words, a much longer track record of violations at Curbside generated a much more lenient penalty.

If I didn't know better, I 'd think the city was using the 1990s conviction as a means to shut the Pony down in order to close what they perceive as an undesirable business on the main street going into downtown.

Pony Loses Liquor License

In case you missed this, The Pony Steakhouse and Cabaret had its liquor license pulled by the Liquor Control Commission Monday night, due to the owner having been convicted of tax evasion and forgery in California in the 1990s. Since, of course, the main reason to go to the Pony is to drink and look at girls in scanty outfits dancing, though I understand they have good steaks, I doubt the establishment will stay open long if its appeal to the state falls through.

City council and government have likely been trying to figure out ways to close the Pony every since it opened up. If you clicked on the link, imagine the sign there reading "Girls! Girls! Girls!" on the main street running through Carbondale and only half a block away from the town square. Also imagine every potential new student at SIUC and their parents driving right by that sign on the way to the university? Not a great image to leave in the minds of the parents.

Pony Liquor License

The Pony Cabaret and Steakhouse may lose its liquor license if it gets reclassified as an "adult use" business. The city is arguing that the establishment is operating as an adult business, which I guess means nekkid people, in an area not zoned for it. The owner argues it is an erotic but not adult business.

I do know that I have never yet seen the sign outside The Pony advertising its steak dinner special. Earlier this week, it read "Girls, Girls, Girls". If I saw a business with that on its exterior sign, I know what I would expect to find inside.

The Pony Getting Harassed

In case you missed this, the owner of The Pony Cabaret and Steakhouse, which is not a strip club despite the complaints of some patrons who wish it was, filed a lawsuit against the city claiming that the Assistant City Attorney wants to close down the business.

Once again, it looks as if the city has gotten into a situation, much like Oakland Avenue Auto Repair, where it gave permission to a business to locate without considering all of the ramifications of the decision. I have heard of instances where people visiting SIUC have received directions taking them down Giant City Road, then on to Grand Avenue, bypassing downtown altogether.

Pole Dancing

As far as I know, there is no law against pole dancing in Carbonale. Ergo I see that everyone's new favorite steakhouse (and the traffic indicates it, the parking lot is full most nights), the Pony, has a sign out front advertising pole dancer Vinya Kiss (I think I spelled that right) appearing Wednesday through Saturday night.

Do have to wonder what effect, if any, that will have on parents bringing their children down for a tour of the campus? I read recently that ex President Glenn Poshard had already recommended giving directions to parents that would take them down to East Grand and bring them into the University via that route, rather that directing them to take Main into downtown, past the less than scenic stretch of businesses lining East Main. Making East Grand the defacto main entrance to the University does avoid that stretch of town
