Mini Bikes

Was listening to city council meeting tonight and will publish a more detailed discussion tomorrow but caught that the city has seen an influx of mini-motorbikes. Some of which are ridden up to 30-40 miles per hours on the sidewalk. These are not legal for either street or sidewalk use in the city and the city has confiscated several of them over the past few month

  1. Another problem is dark-clad riders with no lights riding bikes in the wrong lanes and nearly colliding with cars. Surely the City Council could pass a law mandating lights rather than being responsible for avoidable accidents?

  2. There are ordinances saying that bicycles, when riding on the street, are supposed to follow all of the regulations that apply to cars. This includes having lights on the bicycle. Unfortunately, due to their size, it is far easier to enforce auto regulations than ones on bicycles. I do remember receiving a warning for riding my bike on the sidewalk years ago. Have not doe it since.

  3. I have not drove a car in over 30 years and have a e bike. State law says that you can not go over 20 mph without a license. My bike is governed to go under 20. I follow all guidelines by state and city laws. My problem is why are cars allowed to park in bike lanes? I work at SIU and take Poplar Street to work every day and there’s always at least two or three cars in the bike lanes. They need to start ticketing people that park in the bike lanes it is the equivalent of parking in the middle of the road. I have multiple lights on my bike and person and have been hit-and-run three times in the last 10 years.
