PK's

I see PK's is blocking off part of the alley that runs south of the building in order to provide an outdoor seating space to serve customers. The bar and Carbondale Main Street worked to get PK's a n easement on that alley a number of years ago, in order for PKs to set up a beer garden for their customers that smoke. For some reason, management never pulled the trigger on finalizing approval so smoking customers have clustered on the sidewalk in front of the bar for years now.

Maybe the bar will get the easement finalized and turn that stretch of alley into a permanent  beer garden. Putting some sort of wall up there would be a good idea, in order to block any cars driving down it from the west.

PK's

Working to generate revenue, PK's has been selling food out the front door to walk up customers. Saw a sign posted as I drove by yesterday advertising gumbo with a table blocking the door to prevent access to the inside of the bar.

Jason Tanner Passes Away

In case you missed the story, Jason Tanner passed away of throat cancer last Tuesday shortly after midnight. This Facebook page is posting stories and memories of Tanner as well as raising money to cover his funeral expenses. If enough money is raised, the extra funds will go towards a memorial bench located in the downtown area.

Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday Feb. 7th at Walker Funeral Home and 17 bands will play at a a pair of memorials/benefits at PKs and Lost Cross on Feb 15th and 16th.

PK's Mural

PK's, going along with the downtown improvements, is getting a large Black and White mural with the store logo and  "open 365 days a year" on the south side of the building. The format reminded me of the Jack Daniels label design.

Gwen Hunt Passes Away

According to this post on PK's Facebook page,  Gwen Hunt, the boss at PKs for more years than most residents of Carbondale have been alive, passed away Saturday at the age of 84. The bar closed yesterday and most of today in memory of Gwen but the staff figured it would probably annoy her they closed at all so reopened at 4 p.m. today instead of 8 a.m. tomorrow as originally planned.

Intermodal Transport Hub Follow-up

An email I received indicates that the proposed plan for the graded area north of the Amtrak station is as a parking lot to replace the one lost when the new Hilton hotel gets built on the parking area just south of P. K.s. Later, when the city finds funding for the proposed intermodal complex, the parking area gets incorporated into it.

Downtown Hilton

According to Wednesday's Carbondale Times, plans are moving ahead slowly on the 85 room 4 to 5 story Hilton going in just south of PKs. The city sold the parking lot there to the developers for $75,000. No idea what this means for the habituates of PKs but hopefully the new owners will continue to use the space for parking until ground breaking for the facility actually takes place.
