Molly Parker on Carbondale

In case you missed it, SIUC graduate and journalism instructor Molly Parker wrote this long piece on the decline of SIUC and Carbondale in general, the potential for turnaround and how Trump' cuts could further affect the university and city.

  1. This article also raises serious issues. First, if SIUC has gained Carnegie 1 status, surely this is the time to raise the GPA to 3.50 to attract better students, repair the deteriorating infra-structure, and hire more faculty? Second, in view of the current threat to cut funding due to DEI programs why is SIUC not abolishing those programs and firing staff whose very presence threaten the future economic well-being of the University? Why do the administration and BOT think they are free from problems facing other universities here? Neither this kamikaze attitude nor the current Governor whose has turned a surplus into a deficit with his eye on the White House will save the University from probably economic collapse that will adversely affect people living in this area.
