Restaurant Tax

Was talking with someone this morning about business in Carbondale and he made a point of saying that the food and beverage tax drives him away from eating in Carbondale when he comes here to shop. He will make purchases at the stores but chooses to leave the city to eat rather than pay a "1% tip to the city" as he put it.

  1. Here's a comment from two who live in Carbondale: me and my husband. The food and beverage tax does not change our dining-out-in-Carbondale habits AT ALL. We eat at the restaurants we like in Carbondale whenever we feel like it, and do not worry about what amounts to the extra 30 cents on a $30 tab (for the 1% difference referenced by this other person). And we are not the "wealthy elite." 3 kids in college and civil service/ntt at SIU

  2. I really don't think the ext 1% is enough to stop someone from eating in Carbondale but apparently it is enough for some people.
