University College Model

I am thinking calling the proposed administrative restructuring at SIUC moving to a university college model a bad bit of marketing. The term does not describe the desired results and give the indication the entire university will get restructured rather than just administrative offices. At least, that is my impression of the final result from the illustration accompanying the above article. Why not just call it "administrative restructuring" and leave it at that?

  1. It is not clear that the only thing planned is administrative restructuring. When the supporters of university colleges say, "University College personnel are free of departmental allegiances and neutral about disciplines. As a result, they can promote students genuine exploration and discovery...," it gets some worried that their pre-major programs to guide students to the appropriate prerequisites and prepare them for a particular major won't be there anymore because freshmen and sophomores will be placed in a generic "university college" instead.
