State of the City

Mayor Cole gives his annual State of the City address tomorrow. He had a little over two years to go in his second term as speculation is already mounting as to whether he will see a third one, which he says he will address in tomorrow's speech. Given the current state of the city, with the financial difficulties the city is facing and the specter of the Saluki Way tax for any opponent to bring up, I'd bet he announces he plans not to run again, even if he fails to win the Lieutenant Governorship, and will spend the remainder of his term working for the betterment of Carbondale. By that time Sen. Luchetfeld shoudl be retiring, opening the way for Mike Bost to move into his slot and Cole to run for Bost's state representative seat.

  1. From the July 13 Southern Illinoisan:

Cole said he has no desire to join the General Assembly should he not win the lieutenant governorship. That rebuts speculation that Cole would be in line for the seats now held by state Sen. David Luechtefeld, R-Okawville, or state Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro.

"The three of us have never had that conversation; everybody but us has that conversation," he said. "That has never been anything that has been intimated privately between the people that are involved in that scenario."

  2. The great thing for Cole is that the Illinois Democrats might not (or they might) be as corrupt as the Republicans, but they do seem to be blowing the job of running the state. At some point, someone is going to have to get brave and start to fix Illinois. Once the Republicans regain power, Brad will get a seat at the table.

Like in Carbondale, sometimes it is good to be the only hardworking, smart person/politician in the room. I'm guess that sooner or later, Brad will land on his feet.
