Appears there is some concern over the status of the Paul Simon Federal Building, which was listed earlier this year as a potential sale by the administration. No further word or announced arrests regarding last June's defacement of the building

Preservation Commission Meeting

 The Carbondale Preservation Commission will meet in the Civic Center next Monday at 5:30. Not much on the agenda save for the following:

Brief overview/summary of current and recent projects:

1. Creation of Northwest Historic District

2. Historical/Architectural Inventory of the Northeast Quadrant

3. Attucks High School Designation

4. Annual Preservation Awards

Appears the Northwest Historic District will complement the West Walnut Street Historic District. I thought the Arbor District might have been designated as a historic district but not according to the city.

Preservation Commission Meeting

 The Preservation Commission meets this Monday at 5:30 in the civic Center. Not much on the agenda, and I mean that. Aside from approving the March Minutes, there is nothing but the Preservation Award Nominees and Selection of Winners. Not even any reports about stuff.

I have no idea who the Preservation Award Nominees even are though I am certain they are listed somewhere.

Preservation Commission

 Next meeting of the Preservation Commission is at 5:30 on Feb 12 at Hickory Lodge on West Sycamore. Looks like the only topic on the agenda is discussion about the creation of a Northwest Historic District. Not sure how that would play out given the amount of property SIH has purchased in the West Oak area and the willingness with which the organization is willing to raze the houses in the area. There are at least 2 blocks of empty property where houses stood 2-3 years ago.

Of course, on the flip side the owners of those houses had let them deteriorate over the years, to the point were it was likely cheaper to demolish them than to bring them up to code.

Northwest Historical District

 Appears the Preservation Commission is looking into the creation of a Northwest Historic District for Carbondale. I assume that would be the near Northwest encompassing houses in the area of Memorial Hospital, some of which date back to the early 1900s.

Preservation Commission

 The Carbondale Preservation Commission meets this Monday at 5:30 p.m. in room 103 of the civic Center.  However, according to the agenda, there is no business before it save an election.

Committee Openings

 Carbondale has several openings on various boards and commissions, including planning, preservation, Liquor Advisory Board , human relations, personel and Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. If you want a close view at the operations of city government, serving on one of these boards is a good way to do so. Not sure what is going to happing with the Tourism Board, now that Carbondale Tourism no longer handles tourism outreach for the city.

Certificate of Appropriateness

 Sat in on a meeting of the Certificate of Appropriateness subcommittee of the Presearvation Commission, regarding the 5 proposed murals for downtown.  From what I understand, the Certificate of Appropriateness subcommittee determines if a building to which someone wants to make a change, such as painting a mural on it, is historically significant and, if the change is appropriate for the building.

In the case of the 5 building selected for the mural project, only the Varsity Theater and Julia Building fall into the historically significant category and the section of the Varsity for which the mural is proposed is of more recent brick so does not fall under the subcommittee's purview. That leaves the Julia Building, which the subcommittee determined did fall into the subcommittee's jurisdiction, so to speak. However, due to the type of rough brick from which the Julia Building is constructed, the committee determined it would be very difficult to paint a mural on it and, I think, decided to recommned that panels be affixed to the building and a mural painted on them. 

The subcommittee has no say as to whether murals are painted or not and I am not sure what happens if it fails to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for a project.

Preservation Commission

 Update--Due to no new business, the meeting has been cancelled. Nothing going on folks.

Carbondale Preservation Committee meets this Monday at 7 p.m. According to the agenda, almost noting to report or going on.

Historic Preservation Award

 In case you want to nominate your own building, or someone else's, the nomination process for the Carbondale Historic Preservation Award is open until March 1. I think winning the award gets  you placed on a list of properties but the only list I can find on the city website lists the properties that won in 2019. Maybe there is a master list somewhere?

Preservation Committee Meeting

In case you are free at 2 p.m on Jan 7th, the preservation committee has a meeting scheduled, in case you want to weigh in. Looks as if the committee wants to plan an entire month of Preservation themed events for this May:

Founder's Day Reception

It only took 200 years for Carbondale and Jackson County to start honoring the three men responsible for the founding of the community. It does beg the question, if this is the inaugural one, does that mean more are coming?

The Carbondale Preservation Commission will host an Inaugural Founders’ Day Reception from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., on April 15, 2016, in the City Hall/ Civic Center Room 108, at 200 South Illinois Ave., Carbondale, Illinois 62901. The Event is free to the public with refreshments provided.

The Bomb

Longtime Carbondale residents should remember "The Bomb" which stood on the George "Hoot" Gibson property at the corner of East Walnut Street and Giant City Road for well over 50 years. Built by Gibson in his welding shop, the 6' replica bomb stood undisturbed for decades until stolen twice in the last 10 years. Gibson passed away in 1997 and his wife Lucille maintained the bomb at its location until her death in 2012

After her death, the family donated the Carbondale landmark to the Carbondale Preservation commission, which made arrangements to put "The Bomb" on permanent display in the Planning Department's offices on the second floor of the Carbondale City Hall, where it is viewable during office hours.

Historic Preservation Awards Nominations

T he Historic Preservation Commission is accepting nominations for the10th annual Historic Preservation Awards:

The City of Carbondale Preservation Commission is honored to be sponsoring the 10^th Annual Historic Preservation Awards. Any property located within the Carbondale city limits is eligible for a Historic Preservation Award.  Carbondale residents are invited to submit nominations for any property that they feel is deserving of an award.
