I submitted "Frankie Trumbauer Entertainment Plaza" as the name for the downtown entertainment venue. Trumbauer was born in Carbondale in 1901 and spent his career as one of the premier jazz saxaphonists of the 1920s and 1930s. His 1927 recording of "Singing the Blues" was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1977. I thought about Robbie Stokes or Larry "Big Twist" Nolan but would really like to see part of Carbondale's early musical heritage memorialized
Maybe Agnes Ayres (1896-1940) would have been a better choice. She was Carbondale's first major Hollywood star appearing with Valentino in THE SHEIK and THE SON OF THE SHEIK as well as the first version of THE TEN COMANDMENTS. Historical amnesia and antithesis to old b/w films would rule this suggestion out in this area.i.
ReplyDeleteGo ahead and submit her name. since it is a musical venue, I was looking for great musicians from the area.
