Arbor Day

 From the city.  I do wish the city would get around to replacing the trees removed on West Main and West Walnut several years age

The City of Carbondale proudly celebrates its 45th consecutive year as a Tree City USA community. In recognition of this milestone, the Forestry Division will plant a Swamp White oak in honor of our current standing Mayor, Mayor Harvey.  

The Celebration will take place on Arbor Day, Friday April 24 at 3pm at Founders Park, located behind the City of Carbondale Police Department. As part of the observance, the Daniel H. Brush Chapter National Society Daughter’s of The American Revolution will plant a Jefferson elm in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary. 

“Carbondale’s continued recognition as a Tree City USA community reflects our long-standing commitment to sustainability and quality of life” says City Manager, Stan Reno. “Planting trees in honor of Mayor Harvey and America’s 250th anniversary is a meaningful way to celebrate and honor both her great leadership and our nation’s enduring legacy.”   

We ask the community to join us in this celebration and encourage citizens to conduct their own personal Arbor Day celebration by planting a tree of their own.

 I really wish the city woud put some trees back in place along West Main and West Walnut.  A number of them were removed several years ago because of age and disease nd the spaces where they stood still sit empty. We are a tree city so lets put more trees in.

Tree Talks

Want to know more about the trees in Carbondale and how to care for the ones in your yard? The city will host tri-annual Tree Talks in the summer, fall and spring, walking tours of Carbondale trees hosted by the City Arborist (Did you know we had one of those? We have an Arboretum as well) the first one takes place in Turley Park this Saturday from 9 to 11. The notice doesn't say where but would bet it starts at the pavilion.

Walnut and Main Trees

The city cut down a number of the trees along West Walnut and Main streets in last spring, due to disease and rot. Now that all of the street scapes and trees along S. Illinois have been replanted and upgraded, maybe focus will turn to replacing the removed trees along Walnut and Main.

Trees

Given the comments I have read about the appearance of the east end of Carbondale, especially the stretch of East Main from west of University Mall to Woodlawn Cemetary, I hope the city considers planting trees in the stretches of tree lawn that line both sides of East Main all the way into downtown. The city has put trees along side South Giant City Road, which will certainly improve the appearance of that stretch of street and East Main could certainly use the same treatment. Hopefully the city, or some civic organization such as Keep Carbondale Beautiful, is considering or will look into such a project.
