Someone told me Carbondale had an ordinance on the books forbidding architectural signs installed at a 90 degree angle to the building, hence the reason for all of the signs flush against the building on Illinois. According to city ordinances, that is not so. Architectural signs, those attached to the building, can extend out over the sidewalk and other public rights of way so long as they are at least 8 feet off the ground and the owner provides proof of insurance, in the event the sign falls off the building and damages the sidewalk or konks a passerby on the head.
Daily (more or less) commentary on news and events in Carbondale and the Southern Illinois region, with occasional excursions to other locales.

Signs
Since I was discussing signage yesterday, the sign directing people to Carbondale Main Street , the Chamber of Commerce and Station Carbondale needs updating. Ever since it was installed, the only drivers who could see it easily were those turning onto Illinois from Marion as the arrows were installed parallel to Illinois avenue. Rotate it 90 degrees so that drivers heading North on Illinois can see it. Also, since the Chamber of Commerce moved its offices to the Dunn Richmond Center, taking its name off the sign is overdue as well.

Signage
Really wish the city would get some signage up around town directing people to places like Marberry Arboretum, bike paths, Campus Lake walking path, Boo Rochman (Castle Park) etc. We have so many cool places in town that are hidden away unless you know where they are.
