ABC Unveiling Party

Still time to make this:

Though the America’s Best Communities Prize Competition, Carbondale Main Street, the City of Carbondale and Connect SI have created a revitalization plan utilizing Carbondale’s new resource, Gigabit fiber.  Contracting with Sandel & Associates, including individuals involved in the original Google Fiber initiative in Kansas City, the “Carbondale ABC Grant Writing team”, has crafted a flashy “Playbook” while leveraging big ideas from community members.
An upcoming Unveiling Party will showcase hundreds of copies of the “Playbook”, an inspiring video presentation and remarks from City officials and the Carbondale ABC Team, followed by a champagne toast.  The event will be at Carbondale Community Art’s new gallery space at 304 West Walnut in Carbondale.  The celebration will begin at 6pm, with formal remarks at 6:30pm.  The Unveiling Party will close at 8pm.
We will be asking the question, “Who’s Our Next Champion”, and empowering someone to take the reigns on just one part of the “Playbook”.  If community members are interested in learning more, the event and participation in the process is open to anyone!
The Party will feature complimentary appetizers and champagne.
The “ABC” Prize Competition has awarded Carbondale Main Street with $50,000 so far.  The non-profit organization is now in the running for the next round of funding, where they could win $100,000 for downtown and community development implementation.
The America’s Best Communities Competition is funded by Frontier Communications, Dish Network, CoBank, and The Weather Channel, but was initiated by Frontier as a way to spur economic and community development in the rural areas they serve.  The winner of the entire competition will win a prize of $3 million to execute their plans for improvement.

Varisty Center

Got the opportunity to take a walk through the partially renovated Varsity Theater/Varsity Center for the Arts yesterday as part of the Center's seeking historic/landmark district status. The reason for seeking this, I was told, was to make it more difficult to demolish the building, should it ever pass from the Stage Company and CCA's trusteeship.

Renovations are entering stage 3 which means the plan is to finish interior restructuring of the building. If you ever saw a show in the theater before it closed, you should remember the small balcony theater. The plan is to remove the walls separating it from the larger main theater, creating a 400 seat venue. The bathrooms will be remodeled, offices installed in the basement as well as a concession area on the main floor. Finally, the lobby area will be remodeled to approximate what it looked like when it opened in 1940. However the Center has no photographs of the interior from that time so is having to rely memories of local residents as to how it looks. If anyone reading this has photos of the theater during the early years, the Center would appreciate seeing them.

Stage 4 involves the final restoration of the exterior of the theater and is scheduled for completion in 2013. Of course, that date is contingent on the Center receiving funding, currently estimated to cost $4.5 million to complete stages 3 & 4.

The Historic Preservation committee looked over the paperwork the Center provided and, aside from a couple of questions about wording, seemed pretty favorable disposed for it. The HP committee will have another meeting later this year, at with the Center will make its final presentation for the designation, the public will have an opportunity to make comments. The committee then votes and, if it approves the designation, moves the decision onto the city council agenda. for a vote at a subsequent council meeting.

Calling All Artists

The city and Carbondale Community Arts are still looking for artists to submit proposals for the five mural panels across from the Amtrak station. No particular limitations on what the topics are, except that the city would like the central panel to feature some sort of "Welcome" image.
