Yet another nail in the coffin of Univeristy Mall, Bed Bath and Beyond has announced it will close its Carbondale location. Much like SIUC spinning the 1.4% decline as several different forms of positive, I imaging the mall management will present this as yet another opportunity to get a new tenant into that location. Given the amount of growth and number of buildings it is knocking down around Memorial Hospital, I would imaging SI Healthcare will rent the space out soon.
Yes, another example of Carbondale's rush towards being the "Desolation Row" in this region. Have you noticed how impossible it is to post comments in the DE, Deo Volonte blogspot, and Southern, than it used to be? Many familiar voices from these posts are absent and I'm wondering if a deliberate comment block is occurring to preserve the spon-doctoring that everything is fine here?
ReplyDeleteBed Bath and Beyond is probably near bankruptcy so thats not a shocker. Interesting tidbit worth sharing: I've heard a rumor for about a year that SIH had an agreement in place to lease the entire mall (With the possible exception of the old Macy's location). I never believed that until i heard from an extremely well placed source that Bath and Body Works wanted to renew their lease in the mall but were unable to. Now they are both moving across the street to the old Best Buy building. Seems to add credibility to the fact that someone is interested in leasing a large portion of the mall.
