International student attendance as a whole at SIUC has declined over the past couple of decades. I remember hearing that, during, the 1990s, SIUC has the second largest number of Indian students in the US. In the last decade, the number of students from Saudi Arabia has dropped from just over 600 to under 200, with a number of those looking to transfer to other universities.
A major problem is the desirability, from a financial viewpoint of international students. Many international students pay full tuition rates at the institutions they attend. During the 1950s through the 1980s, SIUC actively recruited international students, one of only a few universities to do so. Over the past couple of decades, as competition for these students from other universities increased, the numbers coming to SUIC decreased.
