The university has announced a couple of changes to the routes for the Saluki Express for the spring. Unfortunately, neither of the changes add to the number of stops in the downtown area. Looking at the schedule, it appears that only the Logan Route makes any stops in downtown, at the Amtrak station, and that during the day. At night, however, it's a different story, as the Late Night Route makes multiple stops throughout downtown after dark.
Granted, the university doesn't want students driving back to campus after an evening at the bars, but why not make it as easy to get to downton at other times of the day as SIUC does at night?

Maybe the right way to get from campus to downtown is walk? At least, before dark? I remember the days when Illinois Ave had hundreds of people walking on it, all the time! Students were way skinnier then.
ReplyDeleteI forgot, thanks for a great year of blogging. I have really enjoyed reading your blog, it is my main source of Carbondale news from afar.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think the worst thing that ever happened to downtown was the bus routes. Prior to that, you could find other business in downtown besides bars and restaurants as students without cars had to call a taxi or bum a ride to get to the commercial districts on either side of town.
ReplyDeleteToday, Murdale, Wal-mart, Kroger, University Mall are all readily accessible to students. Students do come downtown, but the schedules don't encourage them to come during the day.
Thanks for the compliment on the blog. Nice to know people are reading it and finding it useful.
