This is interesting. Despite the sprawl of the city, Carbondale's population has actually grown by a
bit less than 12% since 1970 and had actually dropped 4.5% since 1990, which, if I remember correctly, coincides with the peak years of SIUC attendance.
I'd be interested to see Murphysboro's numbers. They have actively embraced Urban Sprawl with the city's annexation of the Walmart property. I wonder how that is working out for them?
