Bookstores

I was amused by the "damned with faint praise" treatment 710 Bookstore, University Bookstore and Saluki Bookstore got on the SIUC Undergraduate Admissions blog. Given the amount of support for student activities all three bookstores give the university, it's not real good PR to post messages on the official Undergraduate Admissions blog telling people to go to Amazon and half.com for the best prices on books but that local stores might have comparable prices, especially given how much support SIUC gets from Amazon and Half.com,

  1. These first two posts are written by actual students. Sure, the students are probably employees of the office and paid to blog, so the office could edit the posts. But if they do that too often, all of the posts will sound like Alexis's first post. If every post is completely cheery, new and prospective students will recognize the blog as B.S. and not waste their time on it.

  2. Agree with the "recognize... as B.S...." comment. This issue comes to a head (damn cliche) every year and often ends with some students saving a few dollars on a text book, only to find the book is an old edition, missing critical pages, so on and so forth. As a former student employee at THE University Bookstore in the '90's, I spent many hours changing the price stickers on text books from, say $40.50 to $39.90, as the supply and demand changed. My advice, buy your books, and sell them back, at the Univ Bookstore..... and stay thirsty my friend.
